Commission

smART Decorative Arts create bespoke paintings, prints, and ceramic sculptures by commission.

Commissioning a painting, print, or sculpture is the best option if you can’t find that perfect piece of a certain size, style, or colour palette to work in your home, office, retail, or hospitality space. A commissioned piece is unique and special to you; being created with you and your ideas in mind.

Commissioning a piece with smART Decorative Arts is a pretty simple process and above all else, we aim to make the experience of commissioning, a unique, enjoyable, and rewarding journey towards creating a piece of art you will adore.

We provide a free, no obligation consultation via phone, email and/or in person (if you are able to visit the studio) to discuss your requirements. During the consultation we will work together to produce and/or refine your brief; the following areas will be discussed:

Style

Gemma is happy to consider all commission requests; however, as a predominantly abstract artist, requests should be appropriate to her current body of work. Commissions can be undertaken in any of Gemma’s current studio styles; Uncovered, Unearthed or Uninhibited (see portfolio for more details). Alternatively, if you have your own ideas on a particular abstract style, we can discuss these together.

Size and Medium

We will discuss size and proportion, in relation to your space; images of the space, with some approximate dimensions are incredibly useful here.

For painting commissions, we generally work on canvas (however other substrates are available on request); as an example of key considerations, canvas depth is important, particularly if you would like your piece framed in a particular style.

Colour Palette

You may have a specific colour scheme in mind or want assistance with a colour palette that will work best within your space. smART Decorative Arts have extensive experience and expertise in colour consultancy within the decorative arts and specialist decoration fields.

Budget

Having an initial budget in mind is advantageous, as this will give us parameters to work within; we will discuss this with you in detail during your consultation. Several factors will affect the cost of a commissioned piece, such as: size, materials/medium, timescales, research requirements, and finishing (such as framing) etc.

Timescales

If there is a specific and/or important date for completion of the work, please allow sufficient time and include this in the initial brief. The larger the work the longer it will take, but equally the chosen style will have time implications. As a guide, regardless of size, a piece from our current studio styles, would take a minimum of one month to complete, due to the nature of the techniques used to create the paintings.

Finishing touches

Our current studio styles of painting work very well unframed; our deep canvases can be gallery wrapped (the decorative surface extends over the edges) or the edges painted in a plain colour to suit your chosen palette.

Alternatively there are a wide variety of framing options available for all our original artwork substrates and prints. Framing options and quotes can be provided on request during your consultation period.
