Gemma is currently working in three different studio styles; the Uncovered, Unearthed, and Uninhibited series.

Differing in appearance but related by the materials used in their creation, the works within each series diverge in style and mood due to the use of different techniques and methods in material application and treatment.

Each series draws on the skills, experience, and understanding of materials, and their individual decay processes. This experience and knowledge, gained during Gemma’s two decades of working within the fields of fine art and decorative arts conservation.

Gemma’s original paintings are mixed media; created using a wide range of materials. Cellulose based materials such as: wallpapers, newspaper, and posters. Domestic paints such as: matt emulsions, acrylic and oil eggshells, and flat oils. Artists paints and mediums; oils and acrylics, inks, varnishes, stains, and glazes.

Unless otherwise stated Gemma’s paintings use Loxley Gold stretched canvas; which are individually handmade from quality materials. Sustainably sourced kiln dried pine is used for the 36mm deep frames with an 11oz per yard (380gsm), medium grain, 100% pure cotton which is sized and then universally triple-primed with Titanium White gesso to produce an outstanding surface that takes the paint at its best. With minimal colour sink; each brush stroke is captured exactly as the artist intended so inspiration can flow unhindered. The Gold Chunky range uses a special fixing method for the canvas round the back of the frame which holds it at a consistent' drum-tight' tension and gives a clean edge.

Whilst substrates for original paintings are predominately canvas, timber and metal board are also used on occasion; please see specific artwork information for full details of each piece.

Uncovered

The Uncovered series marks Gemma’s return to creating original artworks.

Each work within the Uncovered series uses a range of media to recreate the unique textures and surfaces found in historic interiors throughout the UK.

Gemma uses artificial ageing techniques combined with methods developed to conserve and restore historic decorative surfaces, to produce original abstract artworks; seeking to portray the beauty and lustre of natural decay, patina, and age.

Uncovered no.1 (pictured above) was the first complete piece for this series and remains one of Gemma’s favourite works. In response for demand for this piece a range of print options are now available through Fine Art America; follow the link below to view our Print Shop.

Unearthed no.9-1a SMALL.jpeg

Unearthed

The unearthed series uses a range of materials used in specialist decoration, conservation and fine art painting to produce abstract pieces, which take on an earthy, geological appearance.

Multiple layers of domestic paints, artists paints and mediums, inks, varnishes, glazes and metal leaf, are treated using artificial ageing techniques and a mixture of techniques developed to conserve decorative surfaces, to produce the organic, topographical imagery.

Uninhibited no.6-1a SMALL.jpeg

Uninhibited

The Uninhibited series depicts the style of abandoned yet adorned interior and exterior decorative surfaces. Again using a range of materials common in specialist decoration, conservation and fine art practice; these abstract pieces, portray the lively alluring imagery of unsanctioned creativity, upon the captivating beauty of naturally decaying decorative surfaces.

A mixture of techniques developed to conserve and restore decorative surfaces are combined with artificial ageing techniques, to treat differing combinations of domestic paint mediums, artists paints, inks and mediums.

A range of print options are now available for select pieces from each of Gemma’s studio styles via Fine Art America, follow the link below to view our Print Shop.
