Analysis

smART Decorative Arts can provide a wide range of analysis options for historic buildings, interiors and artefacts

Materials Analysis

Materials analysis can often form a condition of many heritage projects seeking funding and/or listed building consent. It is also an integral part of appropriate and effective objects conservation and collection care.

Analysis can be undertaken in a wide variety of forms:

  • Simple visual analysis and observation, record photography and drawing

  • Optical microscopy, which may involve polarising light microscopy

  • Spot chemical testing

  • More detailed analytical techniques such as; Scanning Electron Microscopy, Energy Dispersive X-ray Spectroscopy, Infra-red spectroscopy; Raman and Gas Chromatography

Architectural Paint Research

Architectural paint research is a holistic research methodology, which combines the use of paint and material analysis with archival research, in order to provide a detailed narrative and understanding of the history of a heritage site.

Architectural paint research can often form a condition of many heritage projects seeking funding and/or listed building consent. It should be undertaken at the beginning of project in order to aid understanding and inform relevant proposals and conservation management plans for the building or site.

A full architectural paint research report can be used not only to detail and record the decorative and architectural history of a site, but give insight and understanding to the social and cultural history, providing knowledge of important intangible aspects of the heritage asset.

Knowledge and understanding of a sites history and significance can aid in the development of plans for possible re-presentation or re-interpretation, conservation, restoration and/or reinstatement of past decorative finishes, and appropriate design decisions.
